MainstreamIT hosting can provide either POP or IMAP email protocols. What are the basic differences between POP and IMAP? Both of these protocols are used to read your email. Whenever you connect to a POP email service your email client will download all of the emails from the service to your computer, phone, tablet or other device. The email on the server is usually deleted from the server after a few days. One advantage of POP is that your emails are downloaded from the server and then deleted thus ensuring that you don’t run out of email storage space from your hosting provider. A disadvantage of POP is that if you have multiple devices, you will have to delete the same emails on all of your devices. An IMAP email service keeps all of the email on the server and when you delete an email it is deleted on the server and thus all of your devices will show that the email was deleted. A disadvantage of IMAP is that you can run out of email storage if you dont keep your email cleaned up. When you run out of email storage you are unable to receive more email.
If you have multiple devices, they should all be configured for either POP or IMAP.
